Course Objectives:

  • Establish a systematic approach of progressing through controlled simple to more difficult surgical extractions

  • Choose an appropriate treatment approach for individual patients

  • Identify risk factors in oral surgery and help avoid complications and how to treat them when they happen

  • Identify appropriate surgical instrumentation and use them effectively

  • Understand how oral anatomy relates to oral surgical procedures

  • Expand their medical knowledge and apply it to their assessment of patients

  • Identify the different types of impactions we commonly encounter

  • Manage surgical removal of wisdom teeth

  • Manage surgical removal or exposure of other ectopic teeth

  • Advise their patients appropriately about behavioural management and medical issues surrounding treatment of these cases

FRIDAY

  • Introduction to Oral Surgery: Overview and importance of patient safety

  • Basic Exodontia Techniques: Step-by-step guide and common pitfalls

  • Oral Anatomy and Surgical Planning: Essential anatomical landmarks, local anaesthetic techniques

  • Flap Design and Bone Removal: Principles and techniques for effective surgery

    (15 Minute Refreshment Break)

  • Instrument and Material Familiarisation: Types of sutures, haemostats, and their proper usage

  • Radiographic assessment

  • Demographic assessment

  • Review of PMHx and ASA Classification: Assessing physical reserve and fitness for surgery

  • Hands-on Basic Extractions: Practice simple extraction techniques on models/pigs heads

  • Flap Design and Suturing: Create and suture flaps on practice materials
